How to Study for Security+ (The Right Way)

A structured approach to Security+ prep — what to study, in what order, and how to know when you're ready.

How to Study for Security+ (The Right Way)

Most people fail Security+ not because the material is too hard, but because they study the wrong way. Here's what actually works.

The Wrong Way

  • Watching 40 hours of video and calling it "studying"
  • Reading the textbook cover to cover without doing practice questions
  • Memorising acronyms without understanding what they mean
  • Studying for 3 months at low intensity instead of 4–6 weeks at high intensity

The Right Way

Week 1–2: Learn the material

Pick one primary resource (Professor Messer, Jason Dion, or the official CompTIA study guide). Go through it once, taking light notes. Don't try to memorise everything — this pass is about exposure.

Week 3–4: Practice questions

Start doing 30–50 practice questions per day. Read every explanation — even for questions you get right. Track your scores by domain.

Week 5: Targeted review

Look at your domain scores. Spend 80% of your time on your weakest domains. Do more practice questions in those areas.

Week 6: Exam simulation

Take 2–3 full-length practice exams under timed conditions. If you're scoring 85%+ consistently, book your exam. If not, go back to week 5.

When Are You Ready?

You're ready when you can consistently score 85%+ on practice exams AND explain why each answer is right or wrong. That's comfortably above CompTIA's official passing score (a scaled score published on comptia.org), giving you a safe margin.

Exam details change. CertSprint provides independent study material. Exam formats, fees, objectives, domain weightings, passing scores, and retake policies are set by CompTIA and AWS and are revised regularly — always confirm the current details on the official exam pages ( comptia.org, aws.amazon.com/certification) before booking.
