Security+ or AWS CCP First: A Decision Framework for Career Switchers
Both are entry-level and both are worth having — here's how to pick the right first cert without a coin flip (or with one, if it comes to that).
You're switching careers into IT. You have limited time, limited money, and approximately one attention span. Somewhere in your browser history is a comparison of Security+ and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, and you still can't decide. Good news: there is no wrong answer. Question 1: What Do the Job Postings Actually Say?
Stop asking what's “more respected” and start asking what's more requested — in your city, at your level, right now. Open a job board and count. Security analyst and SOC roles will mention Security+ constantly; it's practically the handshake of entry-level security. AWS CCP is the lighter lift: 65 questions, 90 minutes, no performance-based questions, and a passing score of 700 out of 1,000. Most people prep in three to five weeks. It's an excellent first certification because it's winnable — and a win matters when you're three months into a career change and your confidence is doing push-ups in the corner.
Security+ is heavier: 90 questions, 90 minutes, performance-based questions, and a passing score of 750 on a 100–900 scale. Plan on six to twelve weeks. It's the more demanding exam and, for security roles, the more valuable credential. It's also the one that will punish a rushed study plan, so don't book the exam before you've booked the hours.
Question 3: Where Do You Want to Be in Two Years?
Security+ points you toward security operations, governance, and eventually roles like security analyst and then security engineer. AWS CCP is a mile marker on the cloud road: it's the natural stepping stone toward the Associate certifications — Solutions Architect, SysOps, Developer — and roles in cloud engineering and DevOps. Neither is a dead end; they're just different neighborhoods of the same industry.
